World market system 2000. The system hasn't been able to grow, the world not being bigger than it is. It has deepened however and integrated the whoole world culturally. Also Japan belongs to the center. New York is the core but the US is losing its position as unchallenged hegemon, EU and Japan being challengers. In Europe Eastern Europe/Russia's effort to advance into the center has been effectively blocked by heavy defence costs. In the midst of peripheries new semiperipheries have appared: East Asia, Southeast Mediterranean, and parts of South America.
